Worship on radio and TV
Authors and composers are entitled to royalty payments
when their work is broadcast in worship.
Broadcasting companies usually deal with copyright
clearances themselves. The producer of the programme will
ask you for exact details of the copyrights of works being
performed. These details are passed to the Performing Rights
Society (PRS), who issue a performing licence for a fee. This
fee, or royalty, is then paid to the various copyright owners.
Catholic composers should consider joining the Performing
Rights Society (www.prs.co.uk).
Broadcasters will ask written permission of the principal
ministers and musicians to broadcast their performances.
Read the terms and conditions of the contract. Fees are
payable and also a fee to the parish for use of the church.
Only authorised arrangements of music should be broadcast.
